The main idea of the letter to the editor was to find a problem in our local government, explain the issue, and describe a possible solution to fix it. I think this project showcases the 21st century skill Civic Literacy and Engagement. I was able to demonstrate an understanding of a local political problem, as well as being able to participate in my government through my proposed solution. I think I was most proud of my ability to quickly get my letter done and write it well. I'm super proud of the writing and how quickly an idea for the assignment came to me. I developed this 21st century skill by literally partaking in my government, having an opinion on current topics, and reporting that opinion on paper with logical reasoning and opinions. I think the most difficult part was trying to make the faults of my idea seem good compared to the faults of our current system. I wanted to mention the flaws of the idea so I wasn't taken aback when a classmate mentioned them. I think I could've improved my work by giving an estimated yearly cost of our current electrical system and an estimated yearly cost if we put our electrical lines underground. This relates to what I've learned just witnessing and experiencing the Lahaina Fire. Many were talking about how California and many other states that are at risk of fire put their electrical wires under ground. If we did than the fire wouldn't have occurred and all of our outer towns and cities at risk of fire would be protected as well. I can apply this knowledge to my writing in the future. By being aware of current political arguments and problems, and understanding possible solutions, we can educate those around us and make our country a nicer place to be in.
