Save the Coral Reef What is this project? Well this isn't necessarily a project, however it is a big part of my community engagement class. The purpose of that class is to get hours done independently and for the most part, outside of school. So save the coral reef is an organization that I've worked with, and it's a really amazing experience. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I’m most proud of myself and the plants I propagated and helped plant. It’s really important work, and it’s important to get out there in our community and help with things that will benefit everyone in the future. Which 21st Century Skills do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? I believe this assignment addresses Civic literacy and engagement because I demonstrated an ability to participate in my community, and worked to improve it. Not only to impact my life, but others too. How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skills with this assignment? I improved this 21st century skill by simply being there and learning more about how replanting native plants in erosion areas benefits our ocean and sealife. I was able to learn more and understand what is needed in our community, in order to shape the circumstances that affect us. What was most difficult about completing this task? I think the most difficult part of this task was the hard labor, normally it is in Lahaina, so with that heat, the constant sweat, and digging, planting, and painting, it is a difficult task within itself. How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? I could improve this work by bringing my water bottle. I forgot to my last time I participated, so I wasn’t able to get as much done because I was so tired. How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? This relates to what I learned in the past, striking school for climate action. I learned very little about what coral reef alliance does, but I knew it was good for our environment. How can you apply this to future learning? I can apply this to future learning and education by showing and explaining to people why volunteer work is important.
