The day in the life was a 350 or more word essay assigned by my Hawaiian class. Our goal was to write a journal entry from the perspective of our Hawaiian Hero during a defining moment in their life. My goal for that project was to project the pain Patsy Mink was feeling while dealing with discrimination at her college.
Why I chose this work sample.
I chose this work sample because it was very real for me. I tried my best to step into Patsy's shoes and feel the emotions she experienced. I will never truly understand what she went through, however I feel as though I empathized with her pain. I was very proud of this project especially because I can observe what she was feeling through her perspective and my own.
21st Century Skill
This project was an excellent example of communication skills. Through presenting this project I effectively showed I can communicate with a varied audience using oral speaking and written.
My Growth
This assignment challenged me to look through the eyes of a woman of color and go through something I would never go through due to my skin color. It helped me better understand her point of view and the view of many others. I'm so thankful I don't have to deal with oppression due to the color of my skin and this project helped me understand, even if it were for a second, how it may be getting discriminated against for your skin color.
Area of Improvement
I think I could've tried doing more research to get more factual evidence onto the paper rather than emotions of anger and sadness. I could've practiced presenting as well because I did stutter a bit when presenting to the class.
